Auto coverages in Texas
Texas is generally a tort state with required liability, plus a strong statutory tradition of offering UM/UIM and PIP — which you may reject in writing. That “must offer / may reject” pattern is the Texas twist worth understanding before you initial a form.
Liability (BI / PD)
Texas financial responsibility typically centers on bodily-injury and property-damage liability (commonly discussed as 30/60/25-style minimums — confirm current figures). Liability pays others when you are at fault.
Highway construction slows I-35; you misjudge a gap and tap the car ahead. Property damage and bodily injury liability are what respond for their bumper and any injuries — up to your limits.
PIP / MedPay
Texas law generally requires insurers to offer Personal Injury Protection; named insureds may reject it in writing. PIP can help with medical bills and some related losses for you and passengers regardless of fault. Some quotes also show MedPay-style options — ask which first-party medical benefit is on your declarations page.
UM / UIM (including property damage in the UM package)
Texas requires insurers to provide uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage unless rejected in writing. UM/UIM in Texas is framed to address injury and property damage from uninsured/underinsured motorists under the Insurance Code’s UM provisions — so property-damage protection for your car after an uninsured crash may appear as part of UM rather than a separate “UMPD” brand name. Read the quote form carefully; rejection is easy to miss.
Named “UMPD”
You may not see a line item labeled exactly “UMPD” on every Texas quote. If you reject UM entirely, you typically give up that uninsured-motorist property protection too — leaving collision as the main way to repair your own vehicle.
Collision & comprehensive
Collision helps repair your vehicle after a crash with another car or object (minus your deductible). Comprehensive leans toward non-crash events — theft, hail, vandalism, fire, flooding-type weather losses where covered, or hitting an animal. Lenders usually require both on a financed car; on an older paid-off vehicle, you may choose differently.
Parking-garage scrape downtown
A tight spiral ramp leaves a crease down the door. Collision is usually how your car gets straightened, minus the deductible.
Hailstorm over the Hill Country
A spring storm peppers the hood and roof. Hail is a classic comprehensive claim in Texas — subject to deductible and carrier terms.
Deductibles, rental & roadside
A deductible is what you pay first on collision or comprehensive claims — higher deductibles often lower the premium, but only if you could actually write that check. Rental reimbursement can help pay for a loaner while your car is in the shop after a covered claim; many people assume “full coverage” includes it, and it often does not. Roadside assistance covers convenience tows and jump-starts as a separate add-on.
State minimums — the legal floor
Whatever Texas requires to drive legally is a floor, not a financial plan. Minimums change over time; confirm current figures with a licensed agent or official state sources before you buy. Read Asshield™’s guide: state minimums aren’t a plan.
