Auto coverages in Florida

Florida’s everyday auto conversation usually starts with PIP and property-damage liability — the coverages most owners need to register and keep a vehicle on the road — then layers on bodily injury, UM/UIM, and physical damage for the car itself. Coastal weather, tourists, and seasonal traffic make the “optional” lines matter more than the brochure suggests.

Liability (BI / PD)

Property damage liability helps pay for damage you cause to someone else’s car, fence, or building. Bodily injury liability helps with injuries you cause to other people. Florida’s registration rules historically emphasize PIP and PD; bodily injury is still a critical conversation for protecting your savings if someone is seriously hurt. Exact minimums and financial-responsibility rules change — verify with an agent.

Everyday example

A distracted merge on US-98 clips another bumper and a wooden post near a beach parking lot. Property damage liability is aimed at fixing what you hit; bodily injury liability is for the other driver’s medical bills if they are hurt.

PIP (no-fault first-party benefits)

Florida is widely described as a no-fault / PIP state in consumer terms: Personal Injury Protection helps with certain medical costs (and related benefits under the policy) for you and covered passengers after a crash, often regardless of who was at fault — within statutory and policy rules. Treatment timing and benefit percentages matter; this is not a blank medical card. Asshield™ can show what PIP looks like on your FL quote.

UM / UIM

Uninsured / underinsured motorist coverage helps if you are hurt by a driver with no insurance or too little insurance. In Florida it is generally offered with bodily-injury coverage and may be rejected or reduced in writing. Stacked vs. non-stacked UM is a common Florida decision — ask before you sign.

UMPD — usually not a separate FL staple

Florida does not commonly frame a mandatory separate “UMPD” product the way some states do. Required PD liability protects others from damage you cause — not your own sheet metal. If an uninsured driver wrecks your car, collision (subject to deductible) is typically how repairs get funded unless another optional form applies. Do not assume every FL policy has a UMPD line.

Collision & comprehensive

Collision helps repair your vehicle after a crash with another car or object (minus your deductible). Comprehensive leans toward non-crash events — theft, hail, vandalism, fire, flooding-type weather losses where covered, or hitting an animal. Lenders usually require both on a financed car; on an older paid-off vehicle, you may choose differently.

Collision

Rear-end on the way to Destin

Summer traffic stops short; your bumper needs work whether you were at fault or not. Collision is usually the coverage that answers for your vehicle’s repair, minus the deductible.

Comprehensive

Hail, theft, or a storm overnight

Hail dents the roof while you are parked near the beach, or someone steals the car from a lot. That is comprehensive territory — subject to deductible and policy terms.

Deductibles, rental & roadside

A deductible is what you pay first on collision or comprehensive claims — higher deductibles often lower the premium, but only if you could actually write that check. Rental reimbursement can help pay for a loaner while your car is in the shop after a covered claim; many people assume “full coverage” includes it, and it often does not. Roadside assistance covers convenience tows and jump-starts as a separate add-on.

State minimums — the legal floor

Whatever Florida requires to drive legally is a floor, not a financial plan. Minimums change over time; confirm current figures with a licensed agent or official state sources before you buy. Read Asshield™’s guide: state minimums aren’t a plan.

Educational only — not legal advice, not a quote, and not a coverage guarantee. Rules, offers, and product names vary by state, carrier, and underwriting. Talk with a licensed Asshield™ agent about what fits your situation.
