Auto coverages in South Carolina
South Carolina is a tort state that treats uninsured motorist coverage — including property damage — as part of the required auto package. That makes SC one of the clearer “yes, UMPD-style protection exists here” states in Asshield’s footprint.
Liability (BI / PD)
SC requires bodily-injury and property-damage liability (commonly discussed as 25/50/25 — confirm current figures). Liability pays others when you are at fault.
MedPay
Medical payments coverage is generally optional in South Carolina — useful for your own medical bills after a crash, but not a mandatory PIP-style no-fault benefit.
UM (with property damage) & UIM
South Carolina law requires auto policies to include uninsured motorist coverage at least equal to minimum liability amounts, and that UM provision includes coverage for injury to or destruction of the insured’s property (with a possible small deductible — often discussed around $200). Underinsured motorist coverage must be offered but is not mandatory to buy. In everyday language: SC’s mandatory UM already contemplates property damage from an uninsured or hit-and-run driver — ask Asshield™ how that interacts with collision on your quote.
Collision & comprehensive
Collision helps repair your vehicle after a crash with another car or object (minus your deductible). Comprehensive leans toward non-crash events — theft, hail, vandalism, fire, flooding-type weather losses where covered, or hitting an animal. Lenders usually require both on a financed car; on an older paid-off vehicle, you may choose differently.
Beach-traffic tap near the Lowcountry
Vacation traffic stops short; your bumper needs paint. Collision is still the broad crash coverage for your car, even when UM property damage may also be in play.
Tropical storm debris or a stolen scooter rack
Wind throws a limb into the hood, or gear disappears overnight. Comprehensive handles many non-crash weather and theft losses.
Deductibles, rental & roadside
A deductible is what you pay first on collision or comprehensive claims — higher deductibles often lower the premium, but only if you could actually write that check. Rental reimbursement can help pay for a loaner while your car is in the shop after a covered claim; many people assume “full coverage” includes it, and it often does not. Roadside assistance covers convenience tows and jump-starts as a separate add-on.
State minimums — the legal floor
Whatever South Carolina requires to drive legally is a floor, not a financial plan. Minimums change over time; confirm current figures with a licensed agent or official state sources before you buy. Read Asshield™’s guide: state minimums aren’t a plan.
