Auto coverages in Georgia
Georgia is a tort state: liability is required, and insurers must offer uninsured motorist coverage that can include property damage — but you may reject or select different UM limits in writing. Atlanta metro and coastal drivers often under-buy UM relative to traffic density.
Liability (BI / PD)
Georgia requires bodily-injury and property-damage liability (commonly 25/50/25 — confirm). That pays other people when you cause a crash; it does not repair your own vehicle.
MedPay
Medical payments is optional. It can help with your medical bills after an accident regardless of fault, within the limit you buy.
UM / UIM & property damage
Georgia’s UM statute contemplates coverage for bodily injury and for injury to or destruction of the insured’s property, with optional deductibles. You can affirmatively choose lower UM limits or reject coverage per the forms. “Underinsured” situations are often handled within Georgia’s UM framework (including added-on vs. reduced-by approaches depending on the form) — ask which UM option your carrier is quoting.
Named UMPD
You may see property-damage protection inside UM rather than a separate consumer brand called “UMPD.” If you reject UM, you typically also walk away from that property-damage piece — leaving collision to fix your car.
Collision & comprehensive
Collision helps repair your vehicle after a crash with another car or object (minus your deductible). Comprehensive leans toward non-crash events — theft, hail, vandalism, fire, flooding-type weather losses where covered, or hitting an animal. Lenders usually require both on a financed car; on an older paid-off vehicle, you may choose differently.
Five-o’clock merge on I-285
Brake lights stack up; a tap creases the bumper. Collision is the coverage that usually pays to fix your vehicle, minus the deductible.
Hail north of Atlanta or a stolen catalytic converter
Spring storms and parts theft are common comprehensive triggers — subject to deductible and policy terms.
Deductibles, rental & roadside
A deductible is what you pay first on collision or comprehensive claims — higher deductibles often lower the premium, but only if you could actually write that check. Rental reimbursement can help pay for a loaner while your car is in the shop after a covered claim; many people assume “full coverage” includes it, and it often does not. Roadside assistance covers convenience tows and jump-starts as a separate add-on.
State minimums — the legal floor
Whatever Georgia requires to drive legally is a floor, not a financial plan. Minimums change over time; confirm current figures with a licensed agent or official state sources before you buy. Read Asshield™’s guide: state minimums aren’t a plan.
Educational only — not legal advice, not a quote, and not a coverage guarantee. Rules, offers, and product names vary by state, carrier, and underwriting. Talk with a licensed Asshield™ agent about what fits your situation.
