Auto coverages in Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania is another choice state: you elect full tort or limited tort, and every policy includes mandatory first-party medical benefits. That combination — tort choice plus first-party benefits — is the heart of a PA auto conversation.
Liability (BI / PD)
PA requires bodily-injury and property-damage liability; published minimums are often described as relatively low compared with medical costs (commonly cited around 15/30/5 — confirm current law). Higher limits are usually worth discussing if you have assets to protect.
First-party benefits & tort choice
Policies must include first-party medical benefits (often discussed with a $5,000 minimum — verify). Optional packages may add income loss, funeral, or extraordinary medical benefits. Separately, you choose:
- Full tort — broader ability to seek non-economic damages (pain and suffering) from an at-fault driver.
- Limited tort — generally economic losses only unless a serious-injury threshold or statutory exception applies; often cheaper, but more restrictive after a crash.
Election notices matter; defaults can apply if paperwork is ignored. Asshield™ will explain what your carrier’s forms say — this is education, not legal advice.
UM / UIM
Insurers must offer uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage; you may reject in writing on the required forms. Invalid waivers can have consequences under PA law — read before you sign.
UMPD
PA does not treat a standalone consumer “UMPD” product as universally mandatory the way SC frames UM property damage. Protecting your own vehicle after an uninsured driver’s crash usually means carrying collision (and understanding any UM options your carrier shows).
Collision & comprehensive
Collision helps repair your vehicle after a crash with another car or object (minus your deductible). Comprehensive leans toward non-crash events — theft, hail, vandalism, fire, flooding-type weather losses where covered, or hitting an animal. Lenders usually require both on a financed car; on an older paid-off vehicle, you may choose differently.
Icy merge on a weekday commute
Black ice and a short stop bend a bumper. Collision responds for your vehicle’s repair, minus the deductible — whether you were fully at fault or not.
Parking-lot vandalism or a stolen catalytic converter
Someone breaks a window overnight or steals parts from the driveway. Comprehensive is the usual coverage for theft and vandalism losses.
Deductibles, rental & roadside
A deductible is what you pay first on collision or comprehensive claims — higher deductibles often lower the premium, but only if you could actually write that check. Rental reimbursement can help pay for a loaner while your car is in the shop after a covered claim; many people assume “full coverage” includes it, and it often does not. Roadside assistance covers convenience tows and jump-starts as a separate add-on.
State minimums — the legal floor
Whatever Pennsylvania requires to drive legally is a floor, not a financial plan. Minimums change over time; confirm current figures with a licensed agent or official state sources before you buy. Read Asshield™’s guide: state minimums aren’t a plan.
