Auto coverages in North Carolina
North Carolina has been updating auto minimums and underinsured motorist rules in recent legislative cycles. In plain English: liability floors have been rising, and UIM is treated as a core protection — not an obscure add-on. Always confirm what applies to policies effective on your renewal date.
Liability (BI / PD)
NC requires bodily-injury and property-damage liability. Recent law raised commonly cited minimums (toward a 50/100/50-style floor for many personal auto policies effective mid-2025 onward — verify for your effective date). Higher limits still matter when medical bills outrun the legal floor.
MedPay / first-party medical
North Carolina is not a classic no-fault PIP state like Florida. Optional medical payments coverage is the usual first-party medical add-on if you want help with your own bills regardless of fault.
UM / UIM & UMPD
NC requires uninsured motorist bodily injury and uninsured motorist property damage, and — under the newer framework — underinsured motorist bodily injury on personal auto policies (with notice and limit-election rules). UMPD here is a real, named part of the UM package: it helps with damage to your property caused by an uninsured motorist, subject to the limits and any deductible on the form. You may be able to elect higher or lower UM/UIM limits within statutory caps — read renewal notices carefully.
Collision & comprehensive
Collision helps repair your vehicle after a crash with another car or object (minus your deductible). Comprehensive leans toward non-crash events — theft, hail, vandalism, fire, flooding-type weather losses where covered, or hitting an animal. Lenders usually require both on a financed car; on an older paid-off vehicle, you may choose differently.
Rainy merge on the Outer Banks approach
Tourist-season traffic and a sudden downpour; a tap folds a bumper. Collision covers your vehicle’s repair minus the deductible.
Hurricane remnant flooding or a stolen truck
Wind-driven water or theft after a storm weekend — comprehensive is the coverage that usually answers for non-crash losses where covered.
Deductibles, rental & roadside
A deductible is what you pay first on collision or comprehensive claims — higher deductibles often lower the premium, but only if you could actually write that check. Rental reimbursement can help pay for a loaner while your car is in the shop after a covered claim; many people assume “full coverage” includes it, and it often does not. Roadside assistance covers convenience tows and jump-starts as a separate add-on.
State minimums — the legal floor
Whatever North Carolina requires to drive legally is a floor, not a financial plan. Minimums change over time; confirm current figures with a licensed agent or official state sources before you buy. Read Asshield™’s guide: state minimums aren’t a plan.
Educational only — not legal advice, not a quote, and not a coverage guarantee. Rules, offers, and product names vary by state, carrier, and underwriting. Talk with a licensed Asshield™ agent about what fits your situation.
