Auto coverages in Ohio
Ohio is a tort state with required liability. Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage is widely available, and Ohio law has a specific rule about offering limited property-damage protection when UM/UIM is on the policy — unless you already carry collision.
Liability (BI / PD)
Ohio requires bodily-injury and property-damage liability (commonly 25/50/25 — confirm). That pays others when you cause a crash.
MedPay
Medical payments is optional first-party medical coverage for you and passengers.
UM / UIM
UM and UIM help when the other driver has no insurance or too little. Offer and selection rules are form-specific — Asshield™ will show what your carrier includes by default.
UMPD (Ohio’s capped offer)
When a policy includes UM and/or UIM, Ohio generally requires insurers to make available coverage for damage to your insured vehicle caused by an identified uninsured motorist — typically capped (often discussed up to $7,500 with a small deductible). If you already have collision, the insurer need not make that separate UMPD-style coverage available. In short: Ohio recognizes a limited UMPD concept, but collision usually does the heavy lifting for serious damage.
Collision & comprehensive
Collision helps repair your vehicle after a crash with another car or object (minus your deductible). Comprehensive leans toward non-crash events — theft, hail, vandalism, fire, flooding-type weather losses where covered, or hitting an animal. Lenders usually require both on a financed car; on an older paid-off vehicle, you may choose differently.
Snow-slick fender-bender on the commute
Lake-effect snow and a short stop crease a bumper. Collision is the broad repair coverage for your car.
Parking-lot theft or windshield damage
Broken glass, theft, and many weather losses fall under comprehensive when covered.
Deductibles, rental & roadside
A deductible is what you pay first on collision or comprehensive claims — higher deductibles often lower the premium, but only if you could actually write that check. Rental reimbursement can help pay for a loaner while your car is in the shop after a covered claim; many people assume “full coverage” includes it, and it often does not. Roadside assistance covers convenience tows and jump-starts as a separate add-on.
State minimums — the legal floor
Whatever Ohio requires to drive legally is a floor, not a financial plan. Minimums change over time; confirm current figures with a licensed agent or official state sources before you buy. Read Asshield™’s guide: state minimums aren’t a plan.
