Auto coverages in Indiana
Indiana requires liability and, importantly, requires insurers to include uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage unless you reject them in writing. UIM has a statutory floor that is worth knowing before you waive anything.
Liability (BI / PD)
Indiana’s financial responsibility generally means bodily-injury and property-damage liability (commonly 25/50/25 — confirm). Liability pays other people when you are at fault.
MedPay
Medical payments coverage is optional and can help with medical bills for you and passengers after a crash, regardless of fault, up to your chosen limit.
UM / UIM
Each newly written Indiana auto liability policy must include UM and UIM unless rejected in writing. Department guidance commonly cites UM bodily-injury minimums aligned with liability, UM property damage, and UIM bodily injury with a higher floor (often discussed as at least $50,000 for UIM — verify on your form). Do not initial a rejection casually.
UMPD
Indiana’s UM offering includes a property-damage component in the standard UM discussion — so you may see UMPD-style protection as part of UM rather than a totally separate product. If you reject UM, you typically lose that piece; collision remains the backup for repairing your car.
Collision & comprehensive
Collision helps repair your vehicle after a crash with another car or object (minus your deductible). Comprehensive leans toward non-crash events — theft, hail, vandalism, fire, flooding-type weather losses where covered, or hitting an animal. Lenders usually require both on a financed car; on an older paid-off vehicle, you may choose differently.
Roundabout misread in suburban traffic
A hesitant entry and a tap bend a bumper. Collision covers your vehicle’s repair minus the deductible.
Deer on a county road after dusk
Animal strikes are classic comprehensive claims across Indiana’s rural stretches.
Deductibles, rental & roadside
A deductible is what you pay first on collision or comprehensive claims — higher deductibles often lower the premium, but only if you could actually write that check. Rental reimbursement can help pay for a loaner while your car is in the shop after a covered claim; many people assume “full coverage” includes it, and it often does not. Roadside assistance covers convenience tows and jump-starts as a separate add-on.
State minimums — the legal floor
Whatever Indiana requires to drive legally is a floor, not a financial plan. Minimums change over time; confirm current figures with a licensed agent or official state sources before you buy. Read Asshield™’s guide: state minimums aren’t a plan.
