Asshield™ is an independent agency in Lexington, and we help Louisville homeowners by phone, text, email and e-signature. We don't have a Louisville office, and we won't pretend to. What we do is compare homeowners insurance from several companies and explain the parts of a Louisville policy that trip people up: flood, sewer backup, older wiring and roofs, and wind and hail deductibles. Our office is at 2240 Executive Dr Ste 103, Lexington, KY 40505, (859) 368-0162.

Homeowners insurance companies we compare

For Kentucky homes we compare Liberty Mutual, Grange, Progressive, Travelers, National General (by Allstate) and Openly, plus others when they fit. Some carriers are pickier about roof age, older electrical systems or homes near the river, so the right fit for a Crescent Hill four-square may not be the right fit for a new build in Fern Creek.

Ohio River flooding and flash floods

Louisville's floodwall and levee system protects much of the city, but parts of the west and southwest of the county sit in mapped flood zones, and heavy storms have flooded homes far from the river along creeks like Beargrass, Pond and Mill Creek. Standard homeowners policies generally exclude flood. Look up your address on the FEMA flood map, and ask us about a separate flood insurance policy. Flood policies usually have a waiting period before they take effect, so don't wait for a forecast.

Sewer and water backup

Many older Louisville neighborhoods are on combined sewer lines, and heavy rain can push water back up through basement floor drains. Backup of sewers and drains is usually excluded unless you add a water backup endorsement, and it's a different thing from flood coverage. If you have a finished basement, this is one of the first coverages we'll talk about.

Older homes: Highlands, Germantown, Old Louisville, Crescent Hill

Shotgun houses, Victorians and early-1900s homes are a big part of Louisville's charm, and of its underwriting questions. Carriers ask about:

  • Roof age and material
  • Electrical updates (knob-and-tube or older fuse panels can limit options)
  • Plumbing and heating updates
  • Whether replacement cost reflects the real cost to rebuild plaster, trim and brick

Have the years of your updates handy. We'll match the home to carriers that write it and explain any limits.

Newer suburbs: Middletown, Fern Creek, Jeffersontown and the east end

Newer subdivisions off the Gene Snyder bring different questions: closing deadlines, HOA requirements, and making sure the dwelling limit reflects today's building costs. Buying? Send us the address, closing date and your lender's mortgagee clause early. See our new home buyers guide.

Wind, hail and storm deductibles

Severe thunderstorms are common in the Ohio Valley, and some carriers use a separate wind/hail deductible, sometimes a percentage of the dwelling limit. We'll show you exactly what you'd pay out of pocket on a roof claim before you choose.

Bundling with car insurance

Home and auto with one company can make sense, but not always. We'll compare it both ways. See car insurance in Louisville.

Questions we hear

Does homeowners insurance in Louisville cover flooding?

Generally no. Flood from rising water needs a separate flood policy. Water backing up through a sewer or drain is also different; it usually needs a water backup endorsement.

Can I insure an older home in the Highlands or Old Louisville?

Usually, yes, but carriers look closely at the roof, wiring, plumbing and heating. Tell us the years of your updates and we'll find the companies that write it.

Which home insurance companies do you compare?

Liberty Mutual, Grange, Progressive, Travelers, National General (by Allstate) and Openly, plus others when they fit.

Do you have a Louisville office?

No. We serve Louisville from our Lexington office at 2240 Executive Dr Ste 103 by phone, text, email and e-signature.
