High-risk car insurance in Kentucky: tickets, violations and more

Speeding tickets, a reckless-driving charge, a DUI, a lapse, or a few claims can push you out of the "preferred" tier. Kentucky's insurance regulator notes that companies divide drivers into preferred, standard and non-standard, and that tickets and accidents raise rates (KDOI consumer guide). As an independent agency, we compare carriers that may write drivers in each tier — so a record that one company turns down may still get a quote elsewhere.

How Kentucky's point system works

From KYTC's Point System page (601 KAR 13:025):

  • 12 points in two years (7 if you're under 18) triggers a KYTC hearing and possible suspension. A hearing officer may offer probation and State Traffic School instead.
  • Points expire two years after the conviction, but the conviction stays on your record for five years.
  • Examples: 3 points — speeding 15 mph or less over on a regular road, texting while driving, failure to yield, careless driving; 4 points — reckless driving, following too closely; 5 points — improper passing; 6 points — 16–25 mph over, or a moving violation involving an accident.
  • Racing or 26+ mph over can lead to a hearing and possible suspension; attempting to elude police leads to a hearing and immediate suspension.

Insurers usually look at your driving record when they quote and renew, and each one decides how it treats a ticket. A ticket alone isn't one of the reasons Kentucky allows for cancelling a personal auto policy mid-term — that list in KRS 304.20-040 covers things like nonpayment, a suspended or revoked license or registration (yours or a household driver's), and fraud or material misrepresentation. But traffic violations and at-fault accidents can be legitimate reasons not to renew, with at least 75 days' notice (KDOI guide; KRS 304.20-040).

What we can do

  • Compare standard and non-standard carriers we work with, side by side.
  • Tell you which ones may write you now and which may be worth a re-quote once a ticket ages.
  • Help with coverage you need for KYTC or a court — for example the insurance card for an ignition interlock application.
  • If you've been refused coverage in the last 60 days, apply for you through the Kentucky Automobile Insurance Plan, the state's insurer of last resort (KDOI guide).

Kentucky only accepts admitted (Kentucky-authorized) carriers for auto liability at registration (KYTC), so be wary of anyone offering a "special" policy that isn't from a Kentucky-authorized company.

Have ready: license number, dates of tickets/accidents/convictions, any KYTC or court letters, your current declarations page, VINs, and every driver in the household.

Questions we hear

What makes a driver "high-risk" in Kentucky?

There's no single state definition. Carriers look at tickets, accidents, claims, DUIs, lapses and license status, and place drivers in preferred, standard or non-standard tiers.

How many points suspend a license in Kentucky?

Twelve points in two years (seven if under 18) leads to a KYTC hearing and possible suspension.

How long do points stay on a Kentucky license?

Points expire two years from the conviction; the conviction stays on your record five years.

Can my insurer drop me for a speeding ticket?

A ticket alone isn't a reason Kentucky allows for mid-term cancellation. Traffic violations can be a reason not to renew, with at least 75 days' written notice.

Do you insure drivers with tickets and violations?

Often, yes — we work with carriers that may write drivers with tickets, violations and DUIs. Each carrier decides based on its underwriting.

What if no company will insure me?

The Kentucky Automobile Insurance Plan is the insurer of last resort; we can apply for you if you've been refused within 60 days.
