What Kentucky does after a DUI conviction
KYTC suspends the license for a fixed period based on how many offenses you've had in ten years (KYTC: DUI Penalties and Programs; KRS 189A.070):
| Offense within 10 years | Suspension | With ignition interlock (KIIP) | Program |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | 6 months | can be reduced to 4 months | 90-day approved program |
| 2nd | 18 months | 12 months | 1-year program |
| 3rd | 36 months | 18 months | 1-year program |
| 4th | 60 months | 30 months | 1-year treatment |
You can't get your full license back until the ordered alcohol/substance program is complete (KRS 189A.070(2)).
Ignition interlock needs insurance first
To apply for the Kentucky Ignition Interlock Program, KYTC requires the application (TC 94-175), proof of valid registration, and a proof-of-insurance card (KYTC). Switching vehicles later also needs unexpired proof of insurance. With an interlock license, you may only drive a vehicle that has the device installed. That's why the insurance quote is usually the first call — we can help you get the card you need for the application.
Does Kentucky require an SR-22 after a DUI?
Generally, no. Kentucky's DUI rules work through license suspension, the treatment program, ignition interlock and reinstatement — not an SR-22 filing — and insurers report coverage to the state electronically (KYTC; KRS 186A.040). An SR-22 can still come up if another state requires one from you (for example, you moved here from Ohio or Indiana) or if a court order specifically calls for proof of insurance. Follow the exact wording of your order or letter. More detail: SR-22 in Kentucky.
Getting reinstated
After the suspension and program are done, KYTC may require a $40 reinstatement fee, and paying it alone doesn't restore your license; suspensions over a year require vision and written tests (KYTC: License Reinstatement). See car insurance with a suspended license.
How we shop it
Some carriers won't write a driver with a recent DUI; others may, often in the non-standard market. We compare the carriers we work with and tell you which may write you now and what to expect as the conviction ages. If you're turned down everywhere, the Kentucky Automobile Insurance Plan is the state's insurer of last resort (KDOI guide).
Be upfront. A Kentucky insurer can cancel a policy for material misrepresentation (KDOI guide), so tell us about the DUI even if the case is still pending.
Have ready: your KYTC suspension letter or court order, conviction date, KIIP approval letter if you have one, license number, vehicle VIN, and every driver in the household.

Questions we hear
Can I get car insurance after a DUI in Kentucky?
Often, yes. We work with carriers that may write drivers with a DUI. Which ones depends on the date, the number of offenses and each carrier's underwriting.
Do I need an SR-22 for a DUI in Kentucky?
Generally no — Kentucky doesn't use SR-22 filings. You may still need one if another state requires it or a court order calls for it.
Do I need insurance to get an ignition interlock license?
Yes. KYTC's KIIP application requires proof of registration and a proof-of-insurance card.
How long is a first DUI suspension in Kentucky?
Six months, or as short as four months with violation-free ignition interlock participation, plus a 90-day approved program (KYTC).
Can I get insurance with a pending DUI?
Some carriers may still quote or renew while a case is pending. Tell the carrier the truth — misrepresentation can lead to cancellation.
How long will a DUI affect my insurance?
It depends on the carrier; each sets its own look-back period. We'll tell you what each one we quote uses.
Can my spouse drive my car while I'm suspended?
Some carriers may list them as the driver or exclude you. Rules vary, so ask before you change anything.
