Car insurance with a suspended or revoked license in Kentucky

A suspended license doesn't have to mean starting over with insurance. Whether the suspension came from points, a DUI, a lapse in coverage, or another state, our Lexington office works with carriers that may write drivers who are getting their license back, and we'll help you have coverage lined up for the day you're reinstated.

Two different things can be suspended

  • Your driver's license — handled by KYTC's Division of Driver Licensing (points, DUI, court actions).
  • Your vehicle registration — revoked when the state's insurance system shows no coverage. If coverage drops, the state notifies you and revokes the registration unless proof is provided, or the system shows coverage, within 14 days (KRS 186A.040). Reinstating a revoked registration costs $40 at the county clerk (KYTC: Mandatory Insurance).

How license reinstatement works in Kentucky

From KYTC's License Reinstatement page:

  • A $40 reinstatement / re-licensing fee may be required — your suspension notice says whether it applies.
  • Paying the fee alone does not restore your license. Every requirement of the suspension has to be met first.
  • Testing: none if you were suspended less than a year; vision and written tests if more than a year; more than five years means starting over with a permit.
  • You can pay through myDrive (Kentucky license holders), at a Driver Licensing Regional Office, by mail, or by phone at 502-564-1257.

Common reasons for suspension include reaching 12 points in two years (7 if under 18) (KYTC Point System), a DUI conviction (KYTC DUI), or driving uninsured — which can bring a $500–$1,000 fine, up to 90 days in jail, or both, plus revocation of the registration (KYTC).

Where insurance fits

  • Before reinstatement: keep the car insured if it stays registered — Kentucky revokes registrations on uninsured vehicles. If you won't drive or keep the registration, KYTC says to turn the plate in to the county clerk before you cancel the policy (KYTC).
  • Someone else drives your car: some carriers may let you list another licensed driver while you're suspended, or exclude the suspended driver. Rules vary by carrier.
  • Ignition interlock license after a DUI: the KIIP application requires proof of insurance — see our DUI insurance page.
  • Your current insurer: a Kentucky insurer can cancel mid-term if your license or registration is suspended or revoked, with 20 days' notice (KDOI consumer guide). If that happens, call us before the policy ends — Kentucky has no grace period on auto premiums.
  • If no carrier will write you: the Kentucky Automobile Insurance Plan (KAIP) is an insurer of last resort for drivers turned down in the regular market; any agent can apply for you if you've been refused within the last 60 days (KDOI guide).

Suspended in another state?

Kentucky checks the National Driver Register before issuing a license to a new resident (KRS 186.435), so another state's suspension has to be cleared there. If that state wants an SR-22, see SR-22 in Kentucky.

How we shop it

Tell us what was suspended, why, and your expected reinstatement date. We compare the standard and non-standard carriers we work with and tell you which may write you now and which may be an option after the suspension ages. Have ready: your KYTC suspension or reinstatement letter, any court order, license number, VIN or year/make/model, and who else will drive.

Questions we hear

Can I get car insurance with a suspended license in Kentucky?

Often, yes. We work with carriers that may write a policy while you're suspended — for example with another licensed driver listed or the suspended driver excluded — or that start the day you're reinstated. It depends on each carrier's underwriting.

How much is the license reinstatement fee in Kentucky?

KYTC says a $40 reinstatement or re-licensing fee may be required. Your suspension notice tells you whether it applies.

Does paying the fee get my license back?

No. KYTC says every suspension requirement must be met first.

Do I have to retest after a suspension?

Not if you were suspended less than a year. Over a year means vision and written tests; over five years means starting with a permit.

My registration was revoked for no insurance. What now?

Get a policy in place, then reinstate at the county clerk with proof of insurance and the $40 fee.

Can my insurer cancel me because my license was suspended?

Kentucky lets an insurer cancel mid-term for a suspended or revoked license or registration, with 20 days' notice.

What if every company turns me down?

Ask us about the Kentucky Automobile Insurance Plan, the state's insurer of last resort.
