Whether you run a storefront near Destin’s tourism corridor, a service crew in Lexington, or a side hustle that grew into a real payroll, insurance should match how you actually operate — not a generic checklist from a bank form.
Core coverages in plain English
General liability (GL)
General liability — helps if your business is accused of injuring someone or damaging their property in the course of your work (subject to policy terms).
A customer slips on a wet entry mat at your shop and needs treatment. Without GL, legal and medical costs can land on the business — and sometimes on you personally — instead of insurance.
Commercial property
Commercial property — helps repair or replace the building you own or the business personal property you use (equipment, inventory, furniture) after certain covered events.
A kitchen fire damages your leased space and the tools you need to reopen. Property coverage is what helps you rebuild inventory and gear — not just “have a policy on file.”
Business owners policy (BOP)
A BOP (business owners policy) — a common package that bundles general liability with commercial property (and sometimes other features) for eligible small businesses. Think “starter kit,” not “everything forever.”
Many young owners only need the BOP package at first — then add commercial auto, cyber, or professional liability as the business grows. Asshield™ helps you start right-sized instead of overbuying day one.
Workers’ compensation
Workers’ comp — coverage that helps with medical costs and wage replacement when an employee is hurt on the job (rules and requirements vary by state). Often required once you have employees; ask Asshield™ what applies in FL or KY for your setup.
A crew member strains their back lifting equipment. Workers’ comp is designed for that workplace injury path — it is a different conversation from general liability for customers.
Commercial auto
Commercial auto — insurance for vehicles used in the business (vans, work trucks, cars titled to the company). Personal auto policies often exclude business use beyond limited exceptions.
Your branded van is rear-ended on a delivery run. A personal policy may not respond the way you expect; commercial auto is built for that work use.
Cyber (brief)
Cyber insurance — can help after certain data breaches, ransomware events, or related business interruptions (coverage varies widely). Worth a conversation if you take cards, store client data, or run online booking.
A phishing email tricks an employee into sharing login access, and customer records are exposed. Cyber coverage is about response costs and interruption — not a substitute for good passwords and backups.
Professional liability (when relevant)
Professional liability (errors & omissions) — helps when a client claims your advice or professional service caused a financial loss. Common for consultants, agents, designers, and other advice-based work.
A client says a recommendation you made cost them a contract. GL usually focuses on bodily injury and property damage — professional liability is the lane for “you got the advice wrong” claims.
Coverages you don’t think about
These gaps show up for both home and business property. First-time buyers reading this page still get value — and our homebuyer guide points here on purpose.
Sinkhole
Sinkhole coverage — helps with certain damage when the ground settles or collapses in ways your policy defines (Florida has a long history with this risk). It is not always automatic on every policy; ask Asshield™ what your carrier includes or offers as an endorsement (an add-on).
Water backup
Water backup (sewer / drain backup) — helps when water backs up through drains or sump systems into the building. Standard homeowners and many commercial property forms often exclude this unless you add it. A clogged main line flooding a finished basement or shop bathroom is the classic example.
Earthquake
Earthquake — shaking damage is typically excluded from standard property policies. Even if your ZIP feels “low risk,” lenders or personal comfort may still lead to a separate discussion. Asshield™ can say whether it is relevant for your location.
Hurricane / windstorm
Hurricane / windstorm — coastal Florida often uses separate wind deductibles (sometimes a percentage of the building limit) and, in some cases, wind coverage placed differently than the rest of the policy. Know the out-of-pocket before storm season — for the house and the shop.
Flood
Flood insurance is not part of a standard homeowners or commercial property policy. Rising or overflowing water from outside typically needs a separate flood policy — often through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) or a private flood market. Critical for Florida Gulf Coast addresses and any mapped flood zone in FL or KY. Ask Asshield™ how to coordinate flood with your other coverage.
Sinkhole, water backup, earthquake, hurricane/wind, and flood questions apply whether the building is your home or your business. Do not assume “I have a policy” means these are included.
