An independent agency for Ohio drivers
Asshield agents are licensed and appointed to help with personal auto in Ohio. We're an independent agency, not a captive one, so product availability varies by ZIP code and carrier, and we shop the options that fit your situation instead of quoting a single company.
Ohio is a tort (at-fault) state
Unlike Kentucky, Ohio is a tort (at-fault) state. The driver who causes a crash, and that driver's liability insurance, is responsible for the other people's injuries and damage. Ohio doesn't require personal injury protection (PIP).
- Ohio's minimum liability is $25,000 per person / $50,000 per accident for bodily injury and $25,000 for property damage (Ohio BMV). One crash on I-75 with a newer vehicle can blow past those limits, so most drivers choose more.
- Ohio requires you to carry proof of insurance and show it at traffic stops, crash scenes and vehicle inspections.
- Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage and medical payments coverage aren't required in Ohio, but they're worth a close look, since they protect you when the other driver can't pay.
- Vehicle titles in Hamilton County go through the Hamilton County Clerk of Courts Auto Title Division. License plates and registration go through Ohio BMV deputy registrar agencies.

I-71, I-75, I-275 and the Brent Spence Bridge
Most Cincinnati commutes run on I-71 or I-75, with I-275 looping the suburbs and I-74 heading west. The I-71/I-75 Brent Spence Bridge between Cincinnati and Covington is one of the region's worst bottlenecks, and construction on the Brent Spence Bridge Corridor Project began in 2026, with the new companion bridge expected to open in 2031. Years of lane shifts and work zones mean more stop-and-go driving and more rear-end crashes. For commuters on these roads we look first at:
- Liability limits well above Ohio's minimum
- Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage
- Collision with a deductible you could actually pay
- Rental reimbursement, so a claim doesn't strand you
Living in Ohio, working in Kentucky (or the other way around)
Plenty of Cincinnati residents drive across the river to Covington, Florence or the airport area in Hebron every day, and Northern Kentucky residents commute into downtown Cincinnati. Your policy is generally written in the state where you live and garage the car. If you live in Northern Kentucky, see Kentucky car insurance, since Kentucky's choice no-fault and PIP rules apply to you instead.
Neighborhoods and garaging
In a county this varied, where the car is parked overnight changes a quote. Street parking in Over-the-Rhine, Clifton or Northside, a garage in Hyde Park, Oakley or Mount Lookout, and a driveway in Anderson Township, Blue Ash or Colerain all rate differently. Give us the exact garaging address, and tell us if a car is kept at a second address.
UC and Xavier students
Students at the University of Cincinnati and Xavier often keep a car on a parent's policy. If the car is garaged in Clifton or Norwood during the semester, tell us. Carriers handle students away at school differently, and good-student credits vary. Students renting near campus should add renters insurance.

No. Our only office in the region is in Lexington, KY at 2240 Executive Dr Ste 103. We help Ohio drivers by phone, text, email and e-signature.
Is Ohio a no-fault state?
No. Ohio is a tort (at-fault) state. The driver who causes a crash is responsible for the damage, which is why liability limits matter so much.
What are Ohio's minimum car insurance limits?
$25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for bodily injury, and $25,000 for property damage. They're the legal floor, not a recommendation.

Generally the state where you live and garage the car, which here is Ohio. Tell us where you park at work and how often you cross the river.
