Motorcycle insurance

Street bikes, cruisers, touring bikes and trikes in Kentucky and Florida, compared across carriers by a licensed Asshield agent.

Whether you ride the back roads around Lexington or the coast along the Gulf, a motorcycle policy works differently from a car policy. Asshield™ is an independent agency with offices in Lexington and Fort Walton Beach. We compare motorcycle insurance across carriers and explain what each coverage does before you choose.

Motorcycle carriers we compare

Carriers we compare for motorcycles include Liberty Mutual, Grange, Progressive, GEICO, and Dairyland. Not every carrier writes every bike, rider, or state, so we confirm which ones can quote you.

What motorcycle insurance can include

  • Liability for injuries and property damage you cause to others while riding. State minimums are a starting point, not a plan; see state minimums.
  • Collision for damage to your bike from a crash, after your deductible.
  • Comprehensive for theft, fire, vandalism, and storm damage, including while the bike is parked.
  • Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage for when the driver who hits you has little or no insurance.
  • Medical payments for you and, where offered, your passenger.
  • Accessories and custom parts such as saddlebags, custom paint, exhaust, seats, and electronics.
  • Riding gear and roadside assistance where the carrier offers them.

Custom parts and aftermarket accessories

If you've added custom paint, a new exhaust, lights, bags, or a sound system, tell us up front. A standard policy may cover only a limited amount of add-ons, and without the right coverage a claim may not account for parts you added. Keep receipts and photos of the work. Custom-built or heavily modified bikes may need a policy set up for them, and we'll tell you which carriers want that kind of bike.

Seasonal riding and winter storage

Many Kentucky riders park the bike from late fall to early spring, while plenty of Florida riders ride year-round. Some carriers let you reduce coverage while a bike is stored, usually keeping comprehensive for theft, fire, or damage in the garage. Talk with us before you change anything. Dropping liability on a registered bike can cause problems and leaves a gap if you take it out on a warm winter afternoon. If your bike is financed, the lender will usually require collision and comprehensive.

Kentucky rider notes

Under KRS 189.285, Kentucky requires helmets for riders and passengers under 21, for anyone riding on a motorcycle instruction permit, and for riders who have held a motorcycle license for less than one year. Eye protection is required for all riders. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet covers licensing and permits.

Kentucky's no-fault rules and personal injury protection (PIP) don't work the same way for motorcycles as they do for cars, so ask us how PIP, medical payments, and uninsured motorist coverage fit together on your bike. Kentucky riders can quote with our Lexington office by phone, text, or online.

Florida rider notes

According to FLHSMV, Florida's PIP and property damage liability requirement for registration applies to vehicles with at least four wheels, so it doesn't apply to motorcycles the way it does to cars. That doesn't make coverage optional in practice. After an at-fault crash with injuries, Florida's financial responsibility law still applies, so liability coverage matters.

Florida requires eye protection, and riders over 21 may ride without a helmet only if they carry insurance with at least $10,000 in medical benefits for motorcycle crash injuries. PIP on a car policy doesn't count, according to the FLHSMV helmet exemption page. Along the coast, also ask how your policy handles storm and flood damage to a parked bike. Florida riders can quote with our Fort Walton Beach office by phone, text, or online.

What to have ready for a quote

  • Year, make, model, and VIN for each bike.
  • Each rider's license or endorsement and years of riding experience.
  • Where the bike is kept, and whether you store it for part of the year.
  • Any custom parts or accessories you've added.
  • Your current insurance, if you have it.

Questions we hear

Does my car insurance cover my motorcycle?

Usually not. Most auto policies exclude motorcycles, so a bike generally needs its own policy. Send us your auto policy and we'll check what it says.

Do I need uninsured motorist coverage on a motorcycle?

It's optional in many cases, but riders have little physical protection in a crash, so it's worth a close look. We'll show you the uninsured and underinsured motorist options each carrier offers.

Does motorcycle insurance cover custom parts?

Many policies include a limited amount for accessories and custom parts. If you've added more than that, ask about adding coverage, and keep receipts and photos.

Can I reduce coverage when I store my bike for the winter?

Some carriers allow it, usually keeping comprehensive while the bike is stored. Talk with a licensed agent before you change coverage on a registered bike.

Do I need a helmet in Kentucky?

Kentucky requires helmets for riders and passengers under 21, riders on a motorcycle instruction permit, and riders who have held a motorcycle license for less than one year. Eye protection is required for all riders.

Do motorcycles need PIP in Florida?

Florida's PIP and property damage liability registration requirement applies to vehicles with at least four wheels, so it doesn't apply to motorcycles. Liability and medical coverage still matter, and riders over 21 who ride without a helmet must carry at least $10,000 in medical benefits.

Educational only — not a quote, not legal advice, and not a coverage guarantee. Coverage, eligibility, and pricing are set by each carrier and vary by ZIP, property or driver details, and underwriting. Talk with a licensed Asshield™ agent about what fits your situation.
