Getting licensed
How to get your insurance license
This is general education, not legal advice. Requirements differ by state and by line of authority. Always confirm current rules with your state’s insurance department (or DFS in Florida).
- Check your state’s licensing site for producer/agent requirements (education hours, exams, fees, residency rules).
- Complete required pre-licensing education — hours vary by state and by line (e.g. Property & Casualty vs. Life).
- Pass the state licensing exam(s) for the lines you want to sell or service.
- Submit fingerprinting / background check as required by that state.
- Apply for your license with the state; after you’re licensed, seek appointments with carriers through an agency (such as Asshield, if you join our team).
Florida & Kentucky (our office hubs)
- Florida: Florida Department of Financial Services (DFS) — Insurance Agent and Agency Services. Start at myfloridacfo.com/division/agents for licensing information, and use the state’s licensing overview / MyProfile portal for applications.
- Kentucky: Kentucky Department of Insurance — insurance.ky.gov (producer licensing).
Other states Asshield is licensed in
Asshield also serves clients in AL, TX, IN, OH, TN, NC, SC, GA, AR, and PA (in addition to FL and KY). If you live in one of those states, check that state’s insurance department for producer requirements — rules differ.
